Going to wet markets can be a messy affair. But any discerning homemaker will know that they carry fresher produce at cheaper prices compared to any supermarket. Most hawkers are also more than willing to share useful advice, like which meats are best for stews or stir frying.

When in Kuala Lumpur, I visited two such markets. Conveniently located at Bukit Bintang, Imbi Market was a morning stroll away from my hotel. It is a popular breakfast haunt among locals, who come here for Ah Weng Koh’s smooth and foamy Hainanese tea, toasted polo buns and Bunn Choon’s egg tarts, which are usually snapped up within minutes from the oven.

Pudu Market is one of the largest and most comprehensive wet market in Kuala Lumpur… Man, I should have read that as a warning. The atmosphere there was above and beyond any other market I had been to.

Rows and rows of makeshift stalls displaying a plethora of fresh produce were packed with hustling crowds and hawking vendors. It was a boisterous and chaotic mess; a sensory explosion.

Unfortunately I wasn’t prepared for it, and soon began to feel overwhelmed and disoriented, hence these pictures, which simply do not do justice to the market. But if you enjoy visiting local markets as much as I do, this is definitely the place to go in KL.
